Chicken Sandwich Wars … Not Again

Quick! What’s breaded, fried, and placed between two brioche buns, topped with mayo and pickles, and will not go away?

If you answered “the chicken sandwich,” then you’re correct!

I’d like to say that the chicken sandwich wars have returned after a two-year hiatus. But instead, since 2019, it’s been a steady never-ending war between fast-food restaurants fighting for our attention, stomachs, and wallets.

Apparently, it’s working, too. Even a pandemic can’t stop the chicken crusade from bringing us new versions of an old classic. And neither has it stopped us from helping restaurants such as McDonald’s thrive. Even Mickey D’s stock prices have risen since they introduced their newest menu options.

Step Into the Ring

Here’s a quick rundown of the contenders (this list is not exhaustive):

McDonald’s. Check.

Wendy’s. Check.

Chick-fil-A. Check.

Burger King. Check.

Zaxby’s. Check.

Taco Bell. Check. Wait, what?

While the others were expected, that last one, Taco Bell, was surprising. They have released their “version” of a chicken sandwich as only they know how: in taco form.

Most of the other fast-food restaurants feature their newest poultry delights on their websites, but Zaxby’s has taken a slightly bolder approach. They want to make sure that no one forgets the chicken sandwich wars have not ended (nor been decided) just yet.

With a prominent banner placed at the top of their homepage, they want everyone to remember that it’s not over until the final chicken comes home to roost.

And the Winner Is …?

With a dizzying array of choices, I wonder, how will a winner be determined?

Well, leave it up to the mass media giants, to give us their opinion, and help us to begin narrowing down the list. Ultimately, of course, none of this matters. But food is one of the cornerstones that binds humanity together. Plus, this has been a fun experiment, given that most of our surroundings for the past year or so, have been pretty bleak.

After the protests and 2020 presidential election, many of us welcome a lighter change of pace, with a bit of entertainment thrown in for excitement.

However, I’m not sure Popeyes would agree, that this is only for fun.

So, what’s next? Well, after the chicken feathers have settled and a winner (or winners) determined, we’ll move on to the next logical food war: quesadillas.

See you next post!
